What is a direct or unattended cremation?

A direct cremation is a cremation with no attended service. Sometimes called an ‘unattended cremation’ or colloquially known by many people nowadays as a ‘Pure cremation’. Pure is the brand name of a large corporate company that only offers direct cremations, usually as a ‘funeral plan’ that you buy in advance. Companies like Pure Cremation do not have funeral homes that you can visit to make arrangements, sort out paperwork or visit your loved one. They have call centres and warehouses, none currently in Sussex. These type of ‘funeral plans’ that these large on-line companies market are misleading as there is no funeral, just a cremation. They should be more accurately described as ‘cremation plans’.

Can my local independent funeral director offer a direct cremation?

Yes, any funeral director can offer you this option and usually at a lower cost than an on-line company will charge. There are many ways that a local funeral director can personalise a direct cremation for you and your loved one, which a large on-line company cannot.

When you choose us for a direct cremation you will be able to:

Know who is taking care of your special person.
Know where your special person is being cared for.
Have your loved one dressed in their own clothes.
Place personal items like photographs, cards or other
items of sentimental value in their coffin with them.
Spend time with them in our chapel of rest.
Request a soundtrack to be played as they are transported from our
premises to the crematorium.
Spend a few minutes with them in the grounds of the crematorium
immediately before the cremation.
Ask us to help you in creating a memorial service by recommending
local venues, churches and officiants to lead the ceremony.
Ask us for alternative suggestions to a traditional memorial
service. Many families choose to have an informal party, BBQ, meal
out together to share memories of their loved one and celebrate
their life.

Direct cremation: £1,725 including third party costs.

This means we’ll look after your loved one and organise a private cremation. This is the option to choose if you would rather not be present at the cremation. Then you can collect the ashes from us and arrange your own memorial service, where and when you choose.

In this option, we can:

Meet with you to finalise the details and complete the paperwork.
Collection of the person who has died within a 15 mile radius. Outside of this distance will incur additional £1.75/per mile mileage costs. There is an extra cost of £150 for collecting someone between 6pm – 8am and at weekends.
Provide a simple wood veneer coffin
Take your loved one from our funeral home to the crematorium. The date, time and venue is agreed with you. As it is a private cremation, there is no attended service. It’s important to consider this carefully, and only choose this option if it feels right for you.
Provide a simple container for storing the ashes.
You can collect the ashes from us and arrange your own memorial service independently, wherever suits you best.
Optional extras are always available – dressing your loved one; spending time with your loved one in our chapel of rest; placing personal items in their coffin; upgrading of the coffin; meeting at the crematorium on the day of the cremation to have a few minutes with them or even an intimate funeral in our chapel of rest – please ask.

The costs must be fully paid 48 hours in advance of the cremation.
